"VIP", "Superfan", "Preorder", "Nashville show", whatever helps you keep your audience organized. Tags are for you only. Fans never see the tags you give them. Think of them as your own private notes that the whole platform can act on. ## The three ways a fan gets a tag ### You add it in the fan drawer Open any fan from your audience table and you will see a **Tags** section at the top of the drawer. Type a tag and it sticks to that fan right away. Removing one asks you to confirm first, so you do not drop a tag by accident.

### A tags column in a CSV import When you bring fans in from a spreadsheet, you can include a `tags` column. List the tags for each fan separated by commas, like `VIP,Preorder`. Those tags are added to each fan as they come in. See [Importing fans](/your-audience/importing-fans.md) for the full upload guide. ### A sequence adds it automatically A sequence can put a tag on a fan as one of its steps. So you can, for example, tag everyone who finishes your welcome sequence, then treat that group differently from there on. See [Sequences](/sequences/sequences.md). ## What tags unlock Tags are only worth having because of what you can do with them. * **Filtering.** Use the **Tags** filter in your audience to pull up everyone with a given tag in one click. From there you can message or export that exact group. See [Filters and the map](/your-audience/filters-and-the-map.md). * **Tag-triggered sequences.** A sequence can start the moment a fan gets a tag. Tag a fan "Preorder" and they can drop straight into a sequence built for preorder fans, no matter how they picked up the tag. See [Sequences](/sequences/sequences.md).
